Shipping containers condition classification

Although the condition of each container is individual, there is a generally accepted classification of used containers:

1-TRIP shipping containers

A 1-TRIP sea container is a container that has been built and loaded with cargo overseas and has made one voyage on a shipping line across an ocean. Such containers are not considered brand new containers. They are usually 1-2 years old and were actually used for transporting goods and temporary storage. There may be some signs of wear from loading and unloading. However, the walls, floors, doors, locking mechanisms and door seals will be in almost new condition. With fresh paint and minimal dents, rust and scuffs, 1-TRIP containers have the best-looking appearance.

CWO shipping containers

CWO shipping containers are still in good condition to be used for shipping, but they have already traveled around the world enough. They are usually between 7 and 15 years old and will have some wear but will still be wind and waterproof. To obtain CWO status, a container must be inspected and certified. If it is certified as such, it means it can be filled with cargo and stacked on a ship.

WWT shipping containers

The most common type of shipping container available to the public for rent or sale is WWT containers. Wind and waterproof containers are usually over 10 years old and are considered a good option for warehouse storage. They were taken out of rotation by an intermodal shipping company due to failure to meet strict standards. However, a WWT container can be repaired and recertified as a cargo container with CWO status.

WWT state containers must have:

  • Smooth floors with intact seams
  • Working doors
  • Intact rubber door seals.
On WWT containers you can usually see:
  • Dents
  • Surface rust
  • Welded patches

Sea containers AS-IS

The AS-IS container is no longer considered wind and waterproof. Containers in AS-IS condition may be over 15 years old and will show significant signs of wear. AS-IS shipping containers are in much worse condition than CWO or WWT containers. Small holes, warped floorboards and damaged door seals are common.
